The best translation modules for PrestaShop

10 min read 21 Aug 2024

PrestaShop translation modules compared: what they actually translate, what they really cost and where they stop. Plus the Reversia alternative.

Looking for a translation module for your PrestaShop store? The PrestaShop Addons marketplace lists dozens of them, and they are far from equal.

We compared the three most installed translation modules with the Reversia app. For each one: what it actually translates, what it really costs, and the limits the product page never mentions.

  • What each solution actually translates in your back office
  • The full price: licence, subscription and the cost of translation APIs
  • Compatibility with your third-party modules, your theme and your page builders
  • What happens when you publish a new product

One thing to keep in mind before we start: a translation module and an application-level solution do not play in the same league. The comparison below shows it column by column.

Here is a quick overview of the four solutions we kept: who they are for, their starting price, how they handle your third-party modules and what they do with new content. Detailed profiles follow.

Reversia, an application-level translation solution for PrestaShop

Reversia: AI-powered PrestaShop translation

Reversia is not one more module in your /modules folder. It is an application-level solution dedicated to PrestaShop. It installs from your back office and translates your entire store with Claude, Anthropic's AI.

The difference fits in one sentence: where a module stops at the fields it knows, Reversia listens to your back office through PrestaShop hooks. A product created, a description edited, a new CMS block, and the translation follows within 1 to 3 minutes.

  • Compatible with the PrestaShop Addons ecosystem and your custom modules, page builders included

Traduire tout, a PrestaShop translation module by Community developer

Traduire tout

The most complete of the three modules. It translates store content, themes, emails and modules into more than 110 languages, through Google Translate, DeepL, Microsoft Translator or ChatGPT.

A sound choice for a small store with a simple catalogue that wants to test a first market without committing to a monthly subscription.

Traduire tout: the upsides

  • More than 110 languages available, which widens the potential market considerably
  • Works with several engines: Google Translate, DeepL, Microsoft Translator and ChatGPT
  • Word exclusion, smart dictionary and find/replace to fine-tune translations
  • Translations are written to the database and survive uninstalling the module
  • Compatible with PrestaShop multistore

Traduire tout: the downsides

  • Partial compatibility with third-party themes and modules, which can break page templates
  • Bugs and crashes reported on bulk actions
  • Complex initial setup, especially when configuring exceptions
  • Module updates can disrupt the store

Module de Traduction DeepL, a PrestaShop translation module

Module de Traduction DeepL

This module plugs your store into the best-known translation engines and translates products, categories, emails and themes. It comes in a limited free version and a paid one.

Its main appeal is control: you pick exactly which items get translated and you define exceptions.

Module de Traduction DeepL: the upsides

  • Automated translation, with no manual re-entry of content
  • Fine-grained choice of what gets translated, plus exception handling
  • Supports Google, Bing and DeepL, so you can trade quality against cost
  • Content import/export, handy if an external provider proofreads your copy

Module de Traduction DeepL: the downsides

  • Partial compatibility with third-party themes and modules
  • Translation quality varies by engine, especially between free and paid tiers
  • Complex initial setup for a non-technical user
  • External service costs add up on large volumes
  • Module updates can disrupt the store

Ecommerce Copilot, a PrestaShop module for generating and translating with GPT-4

Ecommerce Copilot (GPT-4)

Ecommerce Copilot is first and foremost a content generation module: it writes your product descriptions, category copy and CMS pages with GPT-4. Translation is a secondary function.

Best kept for stores whose real problem is writing time, not opening a foreign market.

Ecommerce Copilot: the upsides

  • Content generation with GPT-4, one of the most capable models available
  • Pre-set prompts designed with search rankings in mind
  • Prompt customisation and style control over the copy produced
  • Versatile: product descriptions, categories, CMS pages
  • You keep the final say on what gets published

Ecommerce Copilot: the downsides

  • Partial compatibility with third-party themes and modules
  • Translation remains a secondary function of the module
  • Without enough customisation, generated copy lacks distinctiveness
  • A human review is still needed before publishing
  • Quality is uneven across languages
  • Needs frequent updates to keep pace with GPT-4 and PrestaShop

The limits of PrestaShop translation modules

With PrestaShop the reflex is well known: a need, a module. For translation, that reflex has three consequences you only discover once the store is live.

1. A half-translated store

No module covers 100 % of a customised store today. You have adapted your theme and installed a dozen modules: translation modules do not handle those cases.

A PrestaShop CMS page only partly translated by a translation module
The classic outcome: a page where part of the content stays in the source language.
  • Blocks generated by your third-party modules stay in the original language
  • Page templates break when the module rewrites theme strings
  • SEO metadata and URL slugs are often forgotten
  • Image alt text almost always slips through

2. Page builders slip through the net

If you compose your pages with Creative Elements or another page builder, modules cannot detect the text stored inside them. Everything has to be redone by hand, which cancels out the time you were trying to save.

3. Support that cannot keep up

Marketplace modules are often maintained by a lone developer or a small team, with outsourced customer service. When something breaks, fixes take time and your store waits.

Our recommendation is simple: a PrestaShop translation module suits a small store testing a foreign market. If international is a real sales channel, you need an application-level solution.

Module or application: how to choose

The question is not the sticker price but the total cost: licence, translation APIs, the time spent patching untranslated areas, and the revenue lost on markets you serve badly. Here is how the two approaches compare.

CriterionMarketplace moduleReversia application
Scope translatedThe standard PrestaShop fieldsThe whole back office, third-party modules included
Custom modules and themesPartial compatibilityCompatible, page builders included
New contentManual bulk re-runDetected automatically in 1 to 3 min
Multilingual SEOPartial or absentHreflang, slugs, metadata, alt text, internal linking
Tone of voice controlReplacement dictionaryGlossary, brand prompt, rules, exclusions
API costsOn you, on topIncluded in the subscription
Number of languagesUnlimited, but configured one language at a timeUnlimited, at no extra cost
SupportOutsourced, variable turnaroundDedicated team and human guidance

A module is paid once and leaves you alone with the result. An application-level solution is paid monthly and takes on the whole chain, from the first import through to ranking in each market.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best translation module for PrestaShop?

Reversia tops our ranking: it is the only solution that translates the entire store, third-party modules and page builders included, with multilingual SEO handled end to end. Among marketplace modules, Traduire tout remains the most complete: more than 110 languages, multistore compatibility and translations kept in the database.

Does a PrestaShop translation module really translate the whole store?

No. Modules cover the standard PrestaShop fields but leave out content generated by third-party modules and page builders, and often SEO metadata and alt text too. The result is a partly translated store.

How much does it cost to translate a PrestaShop store?

A module costs between €10 excl. VAT per month and a €280 excl. VAT licence, plus the cost of translation APIs billed separately by DeepL, Google or OpenAI. Reversia starts at $299 per month, with APIs and unlimited languages included.

Is Reversia compatible with PrestaShop 1.7 and 9?

Yes. Reversia supports PrestaShop 1.7 through 9.x, single-store and multistore, and installs straight from your back office.

Do I pay more for each extra language?

With most solutions on the market, yes: every language added inflates the bill. With Reversia you pay by translated word volume. Going from 2 to 20 languages does not change the subscription price.

What happens to my translations if I stop?

Your translations are written into the PrestaShop database and you remain their owner. They stay in place on your store.

Translating your PrestaShop store without compromise

A module does the job on a small store. As soon as the catalogue grows, the theme is customised and search rankings matter, the untranslated pockets cost more than the subscription they were meant to avoid.

  • The whole back office translated, third-party modules and page builders included
  • Multilingual SEO handled end to end, with no extra plugin
  • New content translated in 1 to 3 minutes, with no re-run
  • A team that answers when something goes wrong

Reversia translates your entire PrestaShop store, keeps up with your new content on its own, and supports you market by market.
